Residenza Lago Scuro
a multidisciplinary artist residency exploring the convergence of food + art.
2022
Residenza Lago Scuro, nestled in the idyllic Italian countryside, is a unique retreat that seamlessly blends the worlds of culinary arts and visual creativity. This residency invites artists and food enthusiasts to immerse themselves in food-making workshops or studio time, offering a perfect setting for inspiration and collaboration. During my stay, I painted a giant chicken next to the garden, milked cows, learned how to make cheese, and reconnected with my passion for organic agriculture and good food. The ten-day residency culminates in a group exhibition, roving presentation, and dinner party. Surrounded by natural beauty and Italy’s rich cultural heritage, Residenza Lago Scuro provides a tranquil environment where participants can explore their creative passions and culinary innovations, fostering a vibrant and dynamic community.
VALLEY OF THE SUNFLOWERS
a project by artist Kenny Barrett in collaboration with project managers Braden Kay of ASU's Global Institute of Sustainability & Sean Sweat of Intel's “Sustainability in Action” program.
2011 - 2012
The Valley of the Sunflowers Project, launched in downtown Phoenix, transformed a two-acre vacant lot into a vibrant sunflower field. This urban agriculture initiative engaged the community, including residents, business owners, and local leaders, to plant and harvest sunflowers. The harvested sunflower seeds were used to produce biodiesel fuel for the neighboring Bioscience High School students' Bio/Solar-powered vehicle they built, creating a full-circle, 'seed-to-engine', experiential STEM learning experience.
Valley of the Sunflowers was a community engagement, public art project by artist Kenny Barrett in collaboration with project managers Sean Sweat of Intel and Braden Kay of the ASU School of Sustainability. The project was initiated through key community partnerships with the Phoenix Union Bioscience High School and the staff & board of Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation.
Intel Foundation & Intel Corporation provided funding for the first two seasons of this project. Generous donation by Hensel Phelps Construction Company, ASU School of Sustainability, Sycamore Farms & Matt Moore, UofA, DPR Construction, ASU Desert Initiative, Sunstate Equipment Rental, Mohammed Zerkoune of USDA, City of Phoenix, APS and many many volunteers made this project possible.
BARCELONA Studies
a mixed body of work by artist Kenny Barrett exploring "identity" while attending the
Metafora International Artist Workshop in Barcelona, Spain.
2006 - 2007
The Metàfora International Workshop in Barcelona offers an unparalleled artistic experience, attracting creatives from around the world to its vibrant program. During my time there, I immersed myself in a dynamic, collaborative environment, working in a dedicated studio space within a historic complex. Guided by internationally renowned artists, I explored various mediums including clay sculpting, welding, screen printing, and installation art. The program encouraged deep engagement with Barcelona's local art scene, allowing me to meet gallerists, curators, and cultural managers, and even exhibit my work in local galleries. This enriching experience not only enhanced my artistic skills but also broadened my understanding of global art practices and expanded my professional and personal network.
